Wildlife in the garden
This year we’ve used photographs to share gardening information. Please visit the gallery.
We are stewards of the land we live on and as gardeners we want outdoor spaces that are balanced and inviting for ourselves and wildlife.
We can do this by growing a diversity of plants from annuals to trees that in turn attracts a mix of pollinators, birds and insects who may assist with pest control; protecting the soil from erosion, reducing our impact through composting, recycling, repurposing, reusing and using less chemicals.
Natural pest control
Ladybug Beetles and their larva who eat aphids,
Black Capped Chickadee, Northern Flicker, Downy Woodpecker and House Wrens, birds who eat ants and other pests,
Parasitic wasps who eat or lay eggs inside their preferred species,
Earthworms who aerate soil with their travel and release nutrients into the soil by eating decomposing vegetation,
Native bees, honey bees, butterflies and moths who pollinate food crops and ornamentals,
Wasps (caution) who eat aphids, spoiling fruit, spiders and pollinate…
Although small in size they each play a role in our gardens becoming inviting and balanced ecosystems.
